The Poultry sub sector is one of most important livestock enterprises particularly in the rural households where over 70% of the country’s population lives. It is an important source of food, income and employment and is therefore an important source of livelihood to over 80% of the rural people (a majority of whom are women). Despite its immense contribution and potential, the sub sector has continued to be constrained by various challenges such as low quality breeding stock, diseases, poor market access and infrastructure.

In view of the above, Winrock International under the Partnership of Safe Poultry Production in Kenya (PSPK) programme, organized a one day seminar aimed at addressing the issue of access to markets. The workshop was held in Nairobi and was attended by producers, traders and private service providers drawn from all over Kenya.

Improved Poultry Practices the Subject of Research Funded by Winrock's John D. Rockefeller 3RD Schol PDF Print E-mail

In order to increase poultry safety, Winrock’s John D. Rockefeller (JDR) 3RD Scholars Program funded a bi-country team in Cambodia and Lao PDR to research Avian Influenza (AI) control and prevention measures during from 2008 to 2010. The team led by Suon Seng of the Center for Development Oriented Research (CENTDOR), Phnom Penh, completed their one-year study in April on the factors that influence smallholder poultry producers to adopt improved bio-security practices. The team reviewed secondary data related to disease outbreaks, interviewed key stakeholders from Government and NGOs, and conducted community and household surveys of 700 small poultry producing households in Cambodia and 400 in Lao PDR.

The Ministry of Livestock Development in partnerships with Winrock International’s Partnerships for Safe Poultry in Kenya and other value chain actors has completed the development of the Kenya National Poultry Improvement Program (KNPIP).
